Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt) is an Austroasiatic language that originated in Vietnam, where it is the national and official language. Spoken natively by an estimated 93.8 million people (2020), it is the native language of the Vietnamese (Kinh) people, as well as a first or second language for ethnic groups in Vietnam. Vietnamese speakers are also found in Southeast Asia, East Asia, North America, Australia and Europe (also see Vietnamese emigration). Vietnamese has been officially recognized as a minority language in 10 countries.
